Slovenian Plum Dumplings (Cmoki) Made Magic

My mom told me about these a long time ago, and while out at the local apple picking venues, I finally found one that had the right kind of plums: Italian sweet plums. Of course, I had to give this a try, and what I found was the most hearty and filling dessert I've ever eaten.

Of course, you can use regular plums for this, too, but they will be a bit bigger. You might also try strawberries or apples, which worked really well for me! Think of these as mini pies, basically, where the potato dough and the sweet fruit mesh perfectly under a topping of breadcrumbs, sugar, and cinnamon. You might die after eating 3 because they're so hearty, but it'll be worth it, I promise.

Also, as a pro-tip: you can actually just make the potato dough, then roll them into snakes like you used to do as a kid with your Play-dough and chop them into teeny little homemade gnocchi. Isn't that cool? Gnocchi is super easy and super satisfying to make from scratch, and I like to freeze mine for future dishes.

But nonetheless, the plum, potato, egg, and sugar are going to give you a lovely little meal, one that is full of magical potential.

Magic in Cmoki

I think Cmoki honestly makes a great peace offering if you have a relationship gone awry (or you're just looking to bring some life back into them after a period of stagnancy). With plum representing healing and love, and potato representing healing, too—and the egg's power of rebirth, and the sugar's ability to sweeten and amplify your efforts—it's the closest thing to a love spell without actually being a love spell.

Elements of water and earth, as well as planets Venus, Pluto, and the Moon, get you in touch with your emotions while also helping you stay just stable enough to be rooted and sensible about the healing you're trying to give and get. You'll be able to clearly see the way forward and transform yourself and your relationships as your intuition and self awareness grow (and it'll perk up the love between you and friends or partners, too).

Cmoki

Prep time: 45 minutes

Cook time: 10 minutes

Makes 4-6 Servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb plums, pitted

  • 1lb potatoes, peeled

    • Also try strawberries or apple chunks!

  • 1-2 eggs

  • Pinch of salt

  • All purpose flour - enough until the dough isn't sticky

  • 1 tsp sugar per plum

  • 1 stick butter

  • 1-2 cups plain breadcrumbs

  • Cinnamon & sugar to taste

Directions:

  1. Peel and dice your potatoes, then boil until completely soft.

  2. Cut plums down the middle, but don't completely cut in half. Remove pit.

  3. Add a little salt to drained potatoes and mash until no lumps remain.

  4. Turn out onto the table and spread out to let cool until you can touch it.

  5. Add 2 eggs and knead until combined.

  6. Add as much flour as you need until the dough is no longer unbearably sticky, but also not too crumbly to stay together.

  7. Take small balls of potato dough and flatten into a pancake, then put one plum in the center.

  8. Fill plum with tsp of sugar then wrap the potato dough around it.

  9. Boil dumplings until they float.

  10. Melt butter and add breadcrumbs, frying until golden.

  11. Top dumplings with breadcrumbs, cinnamon, and sugar.

They're really quite a unique dish from the desserts we typically try in America, but they're nonetheless so warm and comforting, and perfect for an aching heart. Try them out, and as always, dober tek!
