Happy Friday, everyone. Friday, of course, being Venus's day.

And if you were wondering what kind of quick and easy treat to whip up for a home date night, then given the season, when apples are cheap as all ever (especially if you live up in New England, AKA apple country right now), anything with apple in it will do. But if messing around with pie crust ain't your thing, then this apple crisp recipe will still do just as well alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's packed with cinnamony, syrupy apples under that streusel topping, and it'll look good next to any dish for an after-dinner dessert.

I grew up eating this more than apple pie, if only because my mom also found it easier than screwing with pie crusts all the time, and it's so damn good. Had it recently at a buffet style lunch, and it doesn't sit in your gut the way all that pie crust does, either, so it's both tasty and easier on the digestion, which you want if you're trying to be flirty, anyway. Nobody can act cute to their date with a stomachache, y'know?

Anyway, I'm taking some notes from my girl Sally today with her apple crisp recipe, just halved for a smaller pan and adjusted a little to be less of a pain to me. Beyond that, we're looking at the apple, cinnamon, oat, nutmeg, and vanilla for today's magic, so let's get into it.

Magic in Apple Crisp

Listen, listen! Sure, it's optional to put vanilla ice cream on the side of your hot treats like apple pie or apple crisp, but if you're doing love magic, vanilla is also associated with all things love and beauty, so definitely pop a scoop on the side for a creamy boost if you can (or just make sure not to skimp on that vanilla extract in the dish itself). More than that, though, while most red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, etc.) can be associated with love, apples specifically were even used in love divination; whoever cut their apple open and had the most seeds in theirs was said to have good luck in love in the coming years. Combine that with the lucky, optimistic, and passionate spices, as well as the dreamy oats (which actually do help with sleep, given they apparently have melatonin in them), and you've got the recipe for a specific kind of love: the cozy, comforting, heartwarming kind, full of fun and joy and the safety to fall asleep beside someone you trust.

With a classic like apple crisp, our main elements are bound to be water and fire for all that emotional connection and bright, joyous passion (with a touch of earth from our oats)—and planets like Venus, the Sun, and Jupiter attached to these items work to help greatly expand our luck, our opportunities, our beauty, and our romance. Jupiter is a magnifying planet, remember: a karmic one like Saturn, and one that can expand anything, be it good or bad. When layering up a spell like this, it's helpful to stack it with the good we're seeking, as Jupiter is the epitome of the phrase, "when it rains, it pours"!

  • 1/4 cup (4 Tbsp) melted butter

  • 1/2 cup (~45g) rolled oats

Directions:

  1. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9x9 baking dish.

  2. Peel, core, and slice your apples, then set aside in a bowl.

  3. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, salt, sugar, and flour to the bowl, and toss the apples until fully coated in everything.

  4. Melt the butter and add to a separate bowl with the rest of the flour, cinnamon, oats, and sugar until you have a crumbly mixture.

  5. Add apples to the greased dish, then add the topping evenly over it.

  6. Bake for 30-35min, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

  7. Let cool for 15min, then serve with vanilla ice cream if you'd like!

Nothing feels like fall like a good apple dish. There are so many, too: from apple cake to apple pie, apple cider donuts. There's a little something for everyone who likes a good old fashioned apple, and this is the time of year to make it, so try it out! ♥
